Well, now that I'm finally in a group where I can potentially do something with this hook that I've had for like, forever, I'm going to put down exactly what it is that's making her so ill. I'm going to put it into Shadowrun terms, since I still have the books for that (I haven't played Mage in many years, so I only remember the basics).
Imagine if you took a Shaman with 8 levels of initiation, and that shaman was also a brilliant designer of cutting-edge nanotechnology.
Now take that Shaman, and have him become obsessed with ruining the life of one Dr. Steven Steiner (aka, HC's father).
What do you get?
A one-off nanite, specifically targeted to kill his only daughter. Built from orichalcum, the nanites are infused with self-Cleansing functions, to hide their magical nature; there is also a sort of link from them to a greater spirit, to ensure that no outer-planar entity will know of their existence (or so is the hope of its creator). They're also infused with custom spells so that if they are ever extracted from their host's body, they will self destruct, leaving no trace. They are also able to self-replicate themselves, while retaining their magical properties. Their final (and destructive) function is to cause her individual cells to heat up rapidly, to the point of death. This sort of death would be slow and agonizing, something this particular person wanted.
This is the reason that every attempt to diagnose her condition has utterly failed. The nanites can disguise their presence from magic detection, and divination would (most likely) turn up a blank. No amount of lab work would reveal their presence, because they would utterly destroy themselves upon extraction. And since they're nanites, no amount of detection by modern means will find them. Plus, due to their magical nature, they cannot be rejected by her remaining biological components, and they will show up in any cells cloned from her DNA.
Yeah, I know. Really messed up thing to do to a character.
The reason I bring this up now, is because of something that was inspired by some RP that went down between Halley and Mother Kindly a few nights ago. Basically,
(( SPOILER ALERT!! SPOILER ALERT!! ))
Halley wants to use The Doctor's original research to completely recreate her mind into an avatar, and transport that avatar into a new cyberbrain. Then she could have a new body cloned for herself out of her own DNA.
I'm sure you can see where the plan all falls apart.
I'm hoping to start running stuff with this hook in the near future, so keep an eye out, if you could please. Thanks for reading!
