((Figured that I should start storing my Ayura-fiction here. Not sure if this is the right subforum for it, or if I should get it moved a few down.
This one was written about three hours after the infamous first Synapse TF attempt.))
"No, you have to install at least three standard heat sinks around the core," Positron said patiently. "Ideal docking points would be here, here, and here, which leaves more than enough room for further modifications."
"But my calculations state that the possibility of the power core overheating with just one heat sink is less than twenty percent," the little hero protested. Perhaps "little" wasn't quite the right word, but Positron couldn't think of a better one for the security level supplicant that only came to just above his waist, looking more or less like a twelve-year old girl.
Which, in this city, meant that she was probably a great deal older.
"I'd ask you to check your numbers again," Positron said, "but even if they're right, you should be aware that if the core melts down, the resultant explosion would be more than enough to turn whichever zone you're in into the new Boomtown." He fixed her with a stare through his helmet visor. "Now, do you really want to rely too much on that twenty percent chance?"
The girl opened her mouth. Closed it. Then she snapped the hatch of her powersuit shut, and nodded briskly.
"I'll go grab those heat sinks from Cooke's," she said. "Thanks for the advice, say I!"
"Spazzy little thing, isn't she," Valkyrie commented out of the corner of her mouth, waving cheerily at the girl's companions, marvelling over their new security levels.
Positron shrugged. "Maybe she'll mellow out in time. It doesn't seem to be affecting her skills, anyway."
"Uh-huh. Still, how hard could Clockwork be? Synapse doesn't usually overwhelm the heroes on his task forces with heavy odds, unlike some others I could name."
"It's good practice for them. They'll have to learn teamwork sooner or later, and-"
"Ambush!"
The warning echoed through Blyde Square, as a horde of Clockwork converged on the task force heroes. Taken by surprise, they scattered, as the air crackled with bursts of lightning and shouts for help on team communicators.
Valkyrie stepped forward, one hand on her weapon, but a cutting gesture by Positron stopped her. "What-"
"Leave them." Positron's voice was calm, expectant. "This isn't our fight."
Valkyrie blinked, then turned as the doors to Cooke's Electronics burst open, and the girl in the powersuit ran out at full tilt towards her teammates.
The Clockwork contraptions noticed as well, and shifted their aim to the newcomer.
Unfazed, the girl made a quick gesture, and a radiant aura of energy emanated from her suit, healing wounds and mending injuries. As she passed by her teammates, she raised a hand towards the skies, and pointed the other at the Clockwork.
"Veniant spiritus lucis," she intoned. "Evocem vos, Ministrae Angela Ayura!"
And for the briefest of moments, Valkyrie saw the girl for what she really was.
The last twisted cog rolled to a stop on the ground, and the beings of light, resembling humans only as much as an unfinished clay model, vanished with nary a trace. Laughing and congratulating each other for their close escape, the task force team wandered away, probably in the general direction of their next mission location.
"It's not such a big surprise, all things considered," Positron mused after some time. "After all, we've seen any number of reformed demons holding hero licences. Why not something like this?"
"Yes, but she might be heading in the other direction."
"We don't know that for sure. But until we do, I'd say that Paragon City needs all the guardian angels it can get."
